There are 7 BASIC STEPS in the CREATIVE
self-publishing process and having a finished manuscript
means you have possibly completed STEPS 1 - 5.
These 7 BASIC STEPS can be summed up as:
1.  IDEA
- brainwave time... you find an idea and roll it around for a while.
2.  RUFF
- that great idea is stuck in your brain and won't leave you alone so you sketch it out and see how it stands up to being actualized on paper or whiteboard or whatever... maybe run it past a few other people... plan the flow of it... maybe chapter headings or maybe a flow chart to knock it into a shape.
3.  WRITE
- you seriously start getting it down on 'paper' whether it's on a computer or freehand... whatever works best for you which includes speech-to-text software these days... all the time remembering it will need to be formatted into an acceptable word processing document for the final stages.
4.  EDIT
- this is usually where the hard work comes in... fine tuning... re-arranging perhaps... getting the content & flow etc right so your message is clear. In a board game this might also be where you "GO BACK ONE SPACE' and re-write/add bits/etc.
5.  PROOF
- the mechanics of pre-completion including spell-check, grammar and that final 'this-is-it' detail. Another 'GO BACK ONE/TWO SPACES.' possibility because this is the FINAL OPPORTUNITY TO GET IT RIGHT.
6.  PUBLISH
- FINALLY it's 'finished' and time for the processes involved with printing/reproduction etc depending on formats... EBOOKS are different of course while PAPERBACKS /hardcovers now have affordable options that weren't available a few years ago.
7.  MARKET &
    DISTRIBUTE
- the final frontier which determines exactly where your project ends up and how 'successful' it is in doing what you want/need it to do.
UNDERSTANDING these basic 7 STEPS gives you CONTROL
over your creative process and enables
YOU to follow through and get it out there.
Up until that final step is taken it is a WORK-IN-PROGRESS
and it is too easy to stumble on
the MANY pitfalls and distractions along the way.

John has a long history or writing and production in film, video & digital formats. He has won professional industry awards including an AFI (Australian Film Institute) Best Animation Award, an AWGIE (Australian Writers Guild) Scriptwriting Award and numerous ATOM (Australian Teachers of Media) Awards. He has also provided illustrations and audio for a variety of publishing clients for over thirty years and was a working musician for nearly twelve years.
