Random Acts Of Generosity - George's Free Herbs

George told us his grown family visit him every weekend and he cooks for them. It’s a tradition he enjoys. He says his pleasure begins when they arrive and always announce “that smells good” as they walk in the door. I think that’s part of the tradition too.

I can understand George giving his herbs away for free. There is simply no price that can be attached to such a wonderfully sharing gift as freshly grown food.

Last week, for example, Jude ran out of something with the meal underway and sent me up to George’s with a torch. At that time I had yet to meet him in person and felt like the proverbial ‘thief-in-the-night’. I half-expected someone to ask me what I was doing and even turned the torch off every time a car went past. Today George laughed at that and promised to not call the police as long as we visited him for a coffee sometime soon. Did I mention he is a very friendly man?

If your taste buds still work then you know fresh herbs are a joyful inclusion in any cooking and George has a few hints to help make it better. He reminded me to add them last, just prior to serving as the aromas are so much of what herbs are about. He reckons a big mistake many make is to add them too early and the cooking loses the subtleties.

George lives up the road from us and grows herbs along his front fence line. He has a “FREE HERBS” sign facing the street where everyone can see it.

When we chatted with George today he was saying the Winter was limiting what he could offer but was pleased we were enjoying his produce just the same. He happily told us what he had planned for next season and how his multicultural neighbours had been an influence in those plans.

I’ve read about community and suburban gardens but for me this ‘picking-herbs-from-someone-else’s-front-yard’ is kind of strange. It feels a bit like stealing.
